Fireplace surrounds

Stone fireplace surrounds without the masonry.

A floor-to-ceiling stacked-stone surround usually means a mason, a header for the weight and days of mess. Panels about 3 lb each go up with adhesive and screws in a day.

Where panels go, and where they do not

Panels are a combustible wall finish. Keep them outside the clearance to combustibles that the fireplace or insert manufacturer specifies, and use a non-combustible material (tile, stone, metal) inside that zone and on the hearth. Your local inspector has the final word. Fire test reports are available on request.

Why it works on fireplaces

At about 1 lb per sq ft, a full chimney breast adds almost no load, so there is no ledger, footing or wall reinforcement. Panels screw to the framing over drywall or plywood, and outside corners on the chimney breast are finished with corner pieces or mitered ends.

Layout tips

Center the first course on the firebox opening so cuts land at the sides, not the middle. Start from a level ledger at the hearth or mantel line, and plan the mantel height before you set panels so the mantel bolts into framing, not into panel.
